What to Carry for Carnival (And What to Leave Behind)

You waited months for this.

Your costume is on. Your makeup is done. Your boots are ready. The music is calling, and it's finally time to hit the road.

But before you leave, there's always one question:

What do I actually need to carry with me for Carnival?

The answer: less than you think.

When you're playing mas, you're going to be dancing, jumping, wining and moving for hours. The last thing you want is a bag packed with things you don't need—or a bulky purse or fanny pack covering the costume you spent all that money on.

The goal is simple:

Pack light. Keep the essentials close. Enjoy the bacchanal.

Here's what actually deserves space in your Carnival bag—and what can stay behind.

WHAT TO CARRY FOR CARNIVAL

1. Your Phone & Portable Charger

Let's be serious. Your phone is coming.

You need your pictures. Your videos. Your group chat. And at some point, somebody in your crew is probably going to disappear and need to be found.

But you shouldn't have to hold your phone all day.

Keep it secured inside your bag when you're not using it so your hands are free to wine, jump, and enjoy the road.

Get the content. Take the pictures. Charge it when not on it

Then put the phone away for a while and live in the moment.

2. Sunglasses

Carnival sun does not play.

A pair of sunglasses is one of those small things you'll be very happy you brought once you've been on the road for a few hours.

Choose a pair you love, but maybe leave your most expensive designer shades somewhere safe.

Carnival gets wild. Things happen.

3. Travel-Size Sunscreen

Apply sunscreen before you leave, but if you'll be on the road for hours, you'll want the option to reapply.

Bring a small or travel-size sunscreen that won't take up much room.

And remember all those areas your costume has exposed that don't normally see that much Caribbean sun.

Shoulders. Chest. Back. Legs. Arms.

Protect the skin, Baddie.

4. Lipstick or Lip Gloss

You don't need your entire makeup bag.

You DO need your lip.

Bring the lipstick, liner or gloss you're wearing that day for quick touch-ups.

Your full makeup kit can stay back at the hotel.

5. Rice Paper, Blotting Sheets or a Small Compact

After a few hours of sun, sweat and dancing, a little shine is inevitable.

Oil-absorbing rice paper or blotting sheets are perfect for Carnival because they're tiny, lightweight and take up practically no room.

If you prefer powder, bring a small compact for quick touch-ups.

We're not redoing the whole face on the road.

We're refreshing the beat and getting right back to the bacchanal.

6. Mints or Gum

Small item. BIG difference.

Throw a few mints or a small pack of gum into your bag.

You're going to be talking, drinking, dancing, and getting close to people all day.

Enough said. 😂

7. Wipes

A few individually wrapped wipes or a mini pack of wipes can become your best friend on the road.

Sticky hands. Makeup mishaps. Spilled drinks. Sweat. Random Carnival situations we don't even need to discuss.

You'll find a reason to use them.

Just don't bring the giant family-size pack.

8. Mini Perfume Spray

Hours on the road can easily turn into hours at the after-party.

A mini perfume spray, rollerball, or travel atomizer gives you a quick refresh without taking up valuable space.

A couple of sprays and we're back outside.

9. ONLY FANS

If you've played mas before, you already know.

IT GETS HOT.

Sun. Crowds. Dancing. Feathers. Hours on the road.

You're going to want some air.

WHAT TO LEAVE BEHIND

Now that we've covered what deserves a spot in your Carnival bag, let's talk about what absolutely does not need to come on the road.

Remember, you're going to be dancing, jumping, wining, and moving for HOURS.

Every unnecessary item becomes something you have to keep up with.

Less stuff = less stress = more bacchanal.

Your Full Wallet

Leave the whole wallet behind.

You don't need every credit card, rewards card, business card, and random receipt you've been carrying since last year.

If you need a physical card for a particular Carnival, bring one. Otherwise, leave the wallet somewhere secure.

Your Entire Makeup Bag

Absolutely not.

Your foundation, concealer, contour, brushes, palettes, and setting spray do not need to play mas with you.

Bring your lip product and either blotting paper or a small compact.

That's enough.

We're refreshing the face—not doing another beat on the road.

Your Most Expensive Sunglasses

Bring sunglasses.

Just don't bring the pair you're going to cry about losing.

Between jumping, dancing, drinks, crowds and general bacchanal, Carnival is probably not the place to test how securely those designer shades stay on your face.

Bring a cute pair you won't be devastated to lose or damage.

Full-Size Anything

Full-size perfume?

No.

Giant sunscreen bottle?

No.

Family-size pack of wipes?

Definitely no.

If you need it, find the travel-size version.

Every inch of space matters when you're trying to keep your road bag light.

A Big Portable Charger

Your phone dying is annoying, but carrying a giant power bank around all day isn't much fun either.

Start the morning with your phone fully charged and use battery-saving settings when needed.

If you know you're going to need backup power, look for the smallest lightweight charger that works for your phone.

Unnecessary Keys

Your entire everyday keychain does not need a Carnival experience.

House key. Car key. Office key. Gym tag. That mystery key you haven't identified since 2019...

Leave them.

Only bring a key if you genuinely need it to get back into wherever you're staying.

Expensive Jewelry

Your costume is already doing enough.

Leave unnecessary expensive jewelry somewhere secure.

Carnival involves crowds, movement, sweat, water, and plenty of opportunities for something to disappear without you even realizing it.

If it's sentimental or expensive enough that losing it would ruin your trip, don't bring it on the road.

Large Bottles of Alcohol

Depending on the Carnival and your band package, drinks may already be provided.

You don't need a full bottle taking up space, adding weight or potentially leaking all over everything you're carrying.

And definitely don't sacrifice valuable bag space that could've been used for your lip gloss.

Priorities.

Food and Snacks You Probably Won't Eat

A tiny snack is one thing if you know you'll need it.

Packing half the hotel breakfast?

No ma'am.

Many Carnival bands provide food and refreshments depending on the experience you've purchased.

Find out what your band provides beforehand so you're not carrying things you don't need.

Multiple Phones or Extra Electronics

Unless you have a legitimate reason for needing another device, one phone is enough.

Leave tablets, cameras, and other electronics in a secure place unless you're specifically creating professional content and have planned for the equipment.

You're playing mas—not opening a mobile office.

Anything Glass

Avoid carrying glass bottles or containers whenever possible.

They're heavier, they can break, and broken glass has absolutely no business anywhere near a Carnival road experience.

Choose small, lightweight, and travel-friendly containers instead.

Your Hotel Room Key Sleeve

You might need your hotel key.

You do not need the little paper sleeve with your hotel name and room number printed on it.

Take the key card and leave the identifying information behind.

Things You Haven't Secured

If something is going to hang loosely from your costume, be stuffed halfway into a pocket, or be carried around in your hand all day, reconsider bringing it.

Carnival is movement.

Jumping + wining + unsecured valuables = somebody eventually saying, "Wait...where's my phone?"

Secure it or leave it.

Anything You Can't Afford to Lose

This may be the most important rule.

Before something goes into your Carnival bag, ask yourself:

"If this disappeared today, would it ruin my entire trip?"

If the answer is yes and you don't absolutely need it, leave it somewhere secure.

And Please...Leave the Giant Fanny Pack

We had to say it. 😂

You did not spend months waiting for your costume, choosing your section, paying for your feathers and getting your entire look together just to cover the front of it with a giant fanny pack.

There are better options.

Your essentials should be secure, hands-free and incorporated into your look—not covering it.
